I was sicker than I thought. Low grade fever and bad cough. mainly. Made my supa cold remedy anyway figuring it would help my immune system. Felt like a cold, but no sniffles. *shrugs* Maybe it pre-empted the usual congestion? So I sludged through work last week and slept as much as possible over the weekend. Better now, but sill have that cough lingering. YAY con plague. I know I got sick because all the stress and lack of sleep from the weeks BEFORE the con. Not shocking.
( Con review.... No more masquerade for me )
Plans for the future? Making this break should give me more time to get back to costuming, but I have to work on a couple of personal projects and get caught up on the con's books first. No more cons planned this year. Can't afford any more trips like that and no more paid vacation time left anyway. Besides, I need the pressure to lift, not compound more.

This con was VERY cool! Very chill. Like sitting at the grown-ups table. XD
Only got to attend a few things... Got there late afternoon on Friday so I missed most of that day's programming. They actually stop programming for dinner break and have nothing going on during the masquerades. It was very relaxing.
So I managed to catch a History of Corsets -- interesting to see how the corsets themselves changed with the dress styles since the 1500s. Makes historical costuming a little tougher to research, but it's an excellent thing to know.
I also sat in on the Basic Presentation Design panel/workshop. Got some extra insight to how ICG masquerade entries are prepared for the stage. Mainly it was about effective walk-on presentations. Best advice: Don't worry about acting, just tell your costume's story.
Also went to the Intro to Cosplay to cheer Lizzy on! ^_^ It was like a cosplay love-fest.
The SciFi/Fantasy Masquerade was just fabulous. There was a bunch of cosplay entries. (Some of them even won awards, how 'bout that!) Enough Steam Punk to go WOW. Some "humorous" costumes. Overall everyone was just having fun with it. Award ceremony was LOOOOOOOONNNGGGGG. haha A lot of awards were given out. Seriously. Anything that really impressed the judges got a nod.
You know, one of the Co-Chairs, who was MCing, said something really nice during intermission about us cosplayers. He's judged a few anime con masquerades and has been impressed with what he's seen. He was most certainly happy to see more of us at this year's con. He expressly invited more of us to "play in their sandbox". ^_^ He also called us the future of costuming. Very inspiring. I want to go make a gazillion costumes now. =3
If anyone tells you that CosCon members look down on cosplayers, THEY LIE. They fawn over costumes no matter what the source is.
Well, anyway... Definitely recommended. Next year they'll be in Milwaukee, Wi and in 2011, somewhere in northern NJ. I'm definitely planning on going in 2011 since it'll be in my backyard!

May 1 - 3, 2009 Crowne Plaza Baltimore North Timonium, Maryland http://www.costume-con.com/cc27/INDEX.HTM
I reserved a double bed room. Staying Friday through Sunday. Who wants to geek out on costumes with me?
I'm asking NOW because the current prereg tier for a weekend pass is $80 and ends 12/31. After that, it goes up to $90 and then $100 at the door. (Man, if I hear ONE MORE person complain about anime con costs, I'm gonna smack them!)
( Partial list of this past year's panels and workshops: )
The list was taken from CostumeCon26's preliminary program listing here, if you want to read the descriptions of each one.

Oh, and for you manly menz.... They have a site for the guys now. American Cosplay Experience. It opened 4/1/08. It's still pretty new, in case you didn't hear about it.

Funny thing.. I was checking out my stash of books for something to read and I came across The Golden Compass. I totally forgot I had that! Someone gave it to me years ago but I never got around to reading it. Wow. Incredible story! Finally finished it today and checked out that daemon quiz on the official movie site....
I am COMPLETELY amused at the results. oh the lulz.

Masquerade and Hall Cosplay Contest stuff is up on the website, in our spiffy new Cosplay Contest Section ^_^
Masquerade pre-reg will open up May 27th.
Everything is pretty much the same as last year, except I'm working with the programming heads to find a better block for rehearsal. Saturday's check-in & at con reg will probably change -- whether be shorter, be earlier... not sure yet.

Masquerade Vitals: --We are now requiring all dialogue/skits to be prerecorded. --We will have an on-site recording "studio" (and I use that term loosely) available on a limited basis for those unable to do their audio recording at home. --Preregistration will open May 1, 2006.
Hall Contest Vitals: --Nothing has changed, because the Hall Contest staff remains fabooooolus!

While I'm on this subject... If you haven't known this already, my masquerade system last year was a big experiment. I used the ICG guidelines, but with a major twist: Divisions only for the craftsmanship awards. Now that I've had a fairly successful test under my belt, I feel a little more comfortable sharing this.
I had reasons for changing things, and this was my thought process. It's really long, but this is how I see the "cosplay masquerade" -- from all angles -- not only as a cosplayer, but as a coordinator and convention administrator as well.

I found this recipe for an herbal remedy many years ago. It's from Jude's Home Herbal Remedies by Jude C. Williams, M.H.
IT WORKS. And no side effects. (that is, if you're not allergic to any of the ingredients....) In fact, it gives me more energy! It's a pain in the ass to make though. Here it is, but my method. The instructions in the book are a little vague.
A bit of warning, however. It works best at the first sign of a cold. And it's REALLY FRELLING SWEET. But it does taste good, and has a little kick from the ginger. Drink it about a half hour before meals, on an empty stomach. (It tastes like crap with food.)
Shopping list: 1 gallon spring water approx. 1/4 lb piece of ginger root (in produce section) 16 oz jar of honey seedless raisins - crap! I forget the box size I get -- you need enough for 1/4 lb. I think I get a 1 lb box and eyeball it... 6 lemons 4 oranges
Equipment: big ass pot shallow bowl for soaking ginger root measuring cup with at least 3 cup capacity, preferably the glass kind (for the honey) bowl for raisins wooden or plastic spoon strainer and a large batter bowl that will support the strainer sharp knife & cutting board a hand juicer thingie and some kid of cup to rest this on-- another measuring cup works nicely! a container to store the orange & lemon juice a funnel
It's Brewing Time! ** Dump water into pot. Put on to boil. SAVE THE WATER CONTAINER!!! (and the cap) ** While waiting for water to boil -- rinse off the ginger root, put it in shallow bowl and cover it with hot water from tap. Set aside. Measure out 3 cups of honey and set aside. Measure out 1/4 lb of raisins and set aside. ** By the time the water boils, the ginger root should be softened. Take it out of the bowl and slice it up. Yes, as is. The slices don't have to be uber thin-- like sliced carrots is enough. You're gonna be boiling the ginger root, thereby extracting all the ginger goodness, so you want them small. ** Once water boils, dump the honey in the pot. If you used a glass cup, you can hold it in the water to dissolve the remainder of the honey. Dump in the ginger root and raisins. Bring it back to a boil and let it simmer for about an hour. The honey will cause a "scum" to form on top-- just skim this off every once in a while. And stir it once in a while too.. ** While that's simmering, you got some time to kill, so I usually juice the lemons and oranges at this point so I don't have to do them in the morning. Then I put all the juice in a separate container and stick that in the fridge. ** Once it's done simmering, the raisins should be floating and all plump! At this point, you'll need to strain it into another pot or bowl so the liquid can be poured in the water container. A batter bowl works best so you don't make a mess pouring it into the water container. And this is why you need a funnel! So: strainer + bowl to funnel + water container. I usually let the concoction cool a bit in the big pot before I do any straining. Boiling hot liquid + plastic = EWWWWW... ** Once it's poured in the water container, cap it tight and stick it in the fridge overnight. In the morning, add the freshly squeezed orange and lemon juice, shake it well, and enjoy!
I think I covered everything....
According to the book, you need to "mix well and drink 2 - 3 glasses per day." That is why I get a gallon of spring water. It makes it easier-- just shake it! That and spring water is best for any herbal remedy....
I kick start the effects by drinking 3 glasses on the first day, then continue until the brew is gone with 2 or 3 glasses a day. Symptoms pretty much disappear after a day and a half.
Feel better all of you!!! ^_^
